Challah


Challah is a beautifully braided bread that carries both tradition and warmth in every strand. Its golden crust and soft, slightly sweet interior make it a centerpiece of many tables, especially for Shabbat and festive gatherings. Below is a complete recipe you can use to make your own delicious challah at home.


Classic Braided Challah:


Ingredients

4 cups all-purpose flour

1 packet active dry yeast

1/4 cup sugar

1 cup warm water

2 large eggs

1/4 cup vegetable oil

1 1/2 tsp salt

1 egg (for egg wash).


Instructions:


1 Activate yeast

Combine warm water, yeast, and a pinch of sugar. Let sit until foamy.

2 Mix dough

Whisk eggs, oil, sugar, and salt. Add yeast mixture, then gradually add flour until a soft dough forms.

3 Knead

Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

4 First rise

Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise for 1–2 hours until doubled.

5 Shape

Divide dough into strands and braid into a challah loaf.

6 Second rise

Let the braided loaf rise for another 30–45 minutes.

7 Bake

Brush with egg wash and bake at 175°C (350°F) for 25–30 minutes until golden brown.
